Browse before and after photographs showing examples of perfectly matched composite and ceramic fillings before and after IAOMT Accredited SMART mercury removal.

However large, your mercury amalgam fillings can be replaced with a non-toxic alternative. Depending upon size, we use either the latest composite resins that contain no bis-GMA or its derivatives, or porcelain.  Both types of restoration are completely safe and look fantastic.

Cosmetic awareness

Jeff is well known for his artistic sense and is always mindful of oral aesthetics – whether he is replacing fillings, bonding front teeth with non-toxic Venus Pearl composite, or providing more complex ceramic crown and veneer work.  He avoids the use of metal in the mouth if at all possible.

I am very pleased with this great result.  Excellent aesthetics and contact with the adjacent tooth, achieved in one visit using composite.

Bisphenol-free Venus Pearl composite

Modern composites are far more durable than earlier products.  I use Venus Pearl because it looks great and does not contain any Bisphenol compounds.

The disclosing solution we use for Guided Biofilm Therapy (erythritol cleaning) is also very useful for identifying leaking fillings.

These teeth are far more solid now the cracks associated with the mercury amalgams have been repaired.  The patient is now mercury-free.

Spotting the outline

Even I have difficulty spotting the outline of this composite filling.  Such a contrast to the old mercury amalgam – the whole tooth has lightened up.

Leaking restoration margins can lead to decay, as seen here.  After detection using a disclosing dye, these old composites were replaced with perfectly sealed Venus Pearl fillings.

Three different metals in one tooth

This large mercury amalgam had been ‘secured’ using a brass screw and three separate steel pins. All removed safely and the tooth restored using ceramic only.

I think even another dentist would struggle to identify the filling in this premolar.

Mercury vapour

Another amalgam giving off mercury vapour and weakening the tooth.  The new composite filling is both safe and remedial.

Typical stress cracks

Typical stress cracks

Before
After

Years of driving this mercury amalgam into the tooth through chewing had resulted in typical stress-cracks.  These were repaired with non-toxic composite when the filling was replaced, creating a much stronger unit.

Cracked mercury amalgam

Though I say it myself, this tooth is beautifully restored after replacement of the large, cracked mercury amalgam with a Venus Pearl composite filling.

Beautiful ceramic work

Sometimes a tooth is so dilapidated that only a crown will restore it properly.  Beautiful ceramic work here from our technician John Donno.

Conservative dentistry

Conservative dentistry

It is not essential to run out every stained fissure in a tooth – doing so might weaken it unnecessarily.  Irrespective, it was good to see these teeth brighten up considerably after their mercury amalgams had been removed safely.

Less than an hour to replace these mercury amalgams

Less than an hour to replace these mercury amalgams

It took less than an hour to replace these mercury amalgams – even using the SMART technique. The Venus Pearl fillings are not only non-toxic and great looking, but they will also prevent further cracking.

Two compromised teeth, one with a large mercury amalgam that was removed using the SMART protocol, beautifully restored. Both the patient and I were delighted with the result.

There is something very satisfying about replacing two mercury amalgams in a row.

Beautiful biomorphic Venus Pearl composite

Beautiful biomorphic Venus Pearl composite

Another old mercury amalgam that is breaking down at the edges, cracking the tooth and releasing mercury vapour.  Replaced using the SMART technique with a beautiful, biomorphic Venus Pearl composite.

Amalgam replacement using the SMART technique

Amalgam replacement using the SMART technique

Before
After

Another mercury amalgam replacement using the SMART technique.  As well as emitting mercury vapour, this old filling is leaking at the margins, thereby creating an uncleanable ditch around it.  The replacement Venus Pearl composite is not only non-toxic and sealed to the tooth, it looks infinitely better.

Mercury amalgam in tooth with multiple cracks

Mercury amalgam in tooth with multiple cracks

Before
After

This tooth shows the multiple cracks that invariably appear when mercury amalgam is used as a restorative material.  As you might imagine, it does not bond to the tooth in any way and therefore acts as a stress-wedge.  Contrast with our replacement composite filling , which combines beautifully with the remaining tooth structure and is non-toxic, supportive and aesthetic.

Composite filling shaped by hand

Not so long ago, I would have used porcelain to restore this fractured premolar containing a mercury amalgam.  Thanks to recent technical advances, however, I was able to restore the tooth using a simple, less expensive, composite filling shaped by hand.
