Do you have spaces in your mouth that bother you? Widely regarded as the most important innovation in dentistry of recent times, dental implants are metal cylinders that are placed in the jaws at the sites of extracted teeth. These act like tooth 'roots' and, after the implants have 'integrated', crowns or bridges are in turn placed on them to fill the spaces with fixed 'teeth'. Implants can be used in a variety of ways, ranging from replacing a single tooth to completely eliminating false teeth, though they can also be used simply to provide greater anchorage for existing dentures. The advantages offered by the technique are wide-ranging, and an important consideration is the fact that, unlike conventional bridgework, implant-borne restorations usually leave adjacent teeth undisturbed. Perhaps the most important benefit, though, is the elevation of self-esteem and confidence that accompanies a renewed ability to eat and speak properly.
