A boutique dental practice...

Dr. Jeff Amos

Jeff Amos qualified from Manchester University in 1979 and has lived and worked in Brighton since 1982. Always abreast of the latest developments in his profession, he opened The Clinic in 2002 with the aim of providing the latest and the best in dental healthcare.

Jeff has a special interest in cosmetic dentistry and facial rejuvenation, regularly attending meetings and courses devoted to these exciting new spheres, and he is a member of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.

He began placing dental implants in 1986 - being, therefore, one of the most experienced practitioners in the field - and became 'mercury-free' in 1992.

In his spare time, Jeff collects British modern art (he holds Masters and Doctorate degrees in Art History). His other pastimes are guitar and piano playing, and he has a weakness for classic cars.

The practice

'Brighton's longest established and most exclusive cosmetic dental practice'

Situated in the heart of Brighton's fashionable North Laine area, The Clinic is a well-established but progressive dental practice specialising in the very latest dental and facial rejuvenation techniques.

We offer a complete range of modern procedures at our purpose-built surgery, from simple replacement of mercury fillings to full mouth reconstruction using implants, and all treatment can be carried out under intravenous or gas-and-air sedation if required.

Every patient is shown around their mouth using an intra-oral camera and we take only digital X-rays, which appear immediately on a computer screen and are far less dangerous than traditional X-rays.

Naturally, cross-infection control is also an important concern, and all instruments are sterilised by our qualified staff using the latest equipment.

We believe that our practice is unique, and look forward to welcoming you to The Clinic, where you will meet our highly trained, sympathetic team who are wholly attuned to your needs.

Dental treatments

Veneers

As demonstrated by countless media celebrities, dental veneering is a marvellous technique that will improve both your smile and your general facial appearance. Veneers can be used to treat discoloured, worn or chipped teeth and can correct dental crookedness and spacing without the need for braces. They can also lengthen teeth and so create a more aesthetically pleasing smile.

Dental veneers are very thin facings of porcelain that are bonded to the outer surfaces of the teeth. They have the advantages of greater translucency, which imparts a more natural, aesthetic look, and of elimination of the 'dark line' sometimes seen at the top of older crowns.

The appearance of both dental veneers and crowns can be spoilt by the presence of an uneven gum line, which impairs the aesthetic result. An experienced oral surgeon, Dr. Jeff Amos utilises the latest laser technology to correct such problems before treatment starts.

Tooth-coloured fillings

Nowadays, many people are unhappy with both the potential danger and the unsatisfactory appearance of traditional mercury fillings. The World Health Organisation has stated that there is no safe dose of mercury because it is poisonous at any level, and that the largest intake of the substance within the general population is from mercury amalgam fillings.

Use of mercury filling material has been abolished completely in Germany, Norway, Denmark and Sweden and during pregnancy in the UK, and it is inevitable that it will eventually be outlawed throughout the European Union.

The Clinic was one of the first mercury-free practices in Brighton, and Jeff observes the necessary protocols when removing old mercury fillings and replacing them with the new, non-toxic, tooth-coloured materials.

Dental implants

Do you have spaces in your mouth that bother you? Widely regarded as the most important innovation in dentistry of recent times, dental implants are metal cylinders that are placed in the jaws at the sites of extracted teeth. They act like tooth 'roots' and, after 'integration', crowns or bridges are placed on them to fill the spaces with fixed 'teeth'.

A dental implant can be used in a variety of ways, ranging from replacing a single tooth to completely eliminating false teeth, though it can also be used simply to provide greater anchorage for an existing denture.

The advantages offered by the technique are wide-ranging, and an important consideration is the fact that, unlike conventional bridgework, implant-borne bridges usually leave adjacent teeth undisturbed.

Dr Jeff Amos is one of the most experienced practitioners in the field, having been placing dental implants since 1986 and having treated over 600 cases successfully.

Please telephone to book an Implant Consultation, which will include full digital radiography and a detailed written report and estimate.

Bridgework

A dental bridge is a fixed restoration that can be used in many cases to replace missing teeth.

This procedure is quicker and less costly than placing dental implants, and the recent introduction of strong, pure porcelains means that superb aesthetic results can now be achieved.

If you have any gaps in your mouth that you do not like, please let us know your concerns at your Consultation visit.Jeff pays particular attention to gum shape before preparing teeth for dental crowns, and utilises the latest laser technology to adjust tooth margins, where necessary.

Crowns

Sometimes teeth are so badly damaged by decay, wear or trauma that veneers or cosmetic fillings are unsuitable. Under these circumstances, a tooth can be restored using a dental crown, which covers the affected tooth completely. Due to the latest advances in materials and technology, these restorations can usually be made purely of porcelain - a material that imparts a natural translucency to the crown.

At-home teeth whitening

This is a simple, safe and inexpensive way to improve one of your greatest assets - your smile. Some teeth are naturally dark whilst others darken over time. The technique is suitable for almost all cases, and involves wearing special transparent mouth trays containing bleaching gel, either for a couple of hours during the day or overnight.

Your progress will be monitored carefully at The Clinic, but the longer the trays are worn, the lighter will be the tooth shade achieved.

In-surgery power bleaching

This technique is suited to those who teeth are more resistant to bleaching or who require quicker results.

The Clinic uses the Enlighten Evolution3 system, in which a stronger bleaching gel is painted onto the teeth in the surgery. The patient then spends a relaxing hour listening to music or watching a film using our special 3D eye glasses whilst the teeth lighten by several shades. Included in the procedure is a two-week home-bleaching course to ensure maximum effect.

Sedation dentistry

At The Clinic, we offer various kinds of conscious sedation, each suitable for differing degrees of anxiety. Gas-and-air ( 'happy gas' ) sedation is usually sufficient to calm the nerves of the average patient, but more profound, intravenous dental sedation may be chosen by the very nervous or even 'phobic'.

Whichever technique is used, our aim at The Clinic is to enable people who might otherwise avoid dentistry to receive the treatment necessary for a healthy mouth and smile.

Facial rejuvenation

Muscle neutralising

These widely-used, facial anti-ageing treatments now have a proven safety record. Both are simple procedures that, along with an attractive smile, really do make people look younger.

Botox© neutralises the muscles responsible for frown lines, forehead lines and 'crow's feet' around the eyes, and it can also prevent excessive underarm sweating.

Facial fillers

Restylane© is a naturally-occurring filler substances that smooth out wrinkles and lines, and enhance lips that have thinned with the passage of time.

Both techniques are carried out painlessly at The Clinic using Jeff's acclaimed local anaesthetic techniques.
